The Expert

Stephen Metzger

Steve Metzger was born and raised in northern California and has spent most of his life exploring the area’s back roads and highways, small towns and cities, from San Francisco to Alturas, from Lake Tahoe to Mendocino. He’s the author of Day Trips Sacramento (Globe Pequot Press), Colorado Handbook and New Mexico Handbook (both Moon Publications), and scores of articles for in-flight, travel, health-and-fitness, and skiing publications. He also writes a regular food (and restaurant review) column for the Chico News and Review.

In addition to his travel writing, Metzger is the co-author of The Writer’s Way, a composition textbook used on over 90 college campuses around the country, as well as in Asia and the South Pacific.

Metzger taught English at California State University, Chico for 27 years before retiring in June of 2010. He now teaches writing part time at Butte Community College. He lives in Chico with his wife Liz, a grant writer for Chico Unified School District, and their black Lab, Chloe. Their two daughters, Hannah and Gina, are college students, who also love to travel and write.
